When in America, it’s completely normal to stay in your ski gear — who really has the luggage space for coats and proper boots anyway? Well… that logic didn’t quite translate in Japan. I had a very memorable (and slightly embarrassing) three-hour train ride from Niseko to Chitose, where everyone was dressed in muted shades of grey and black, like winter office wear. 在美国，穿着滑雪装备完全正常——毕竟谁的行李空间够放大衣和雪靴呢？不过……这种逻辑在日本可就不适用了。我有一次非常难忘（也有点尴尬）的三小时火车之旅，从二世古到千岁，车上每个人都穿着灰色和黑色的低调冬装，就像冬日的办公装。而我呢——全身红黄绿的交通灯色，还搭配斑马纹裤子。我永远不会忘记那个瞬间。

Ling never planned any of it. She left her office job, joined some ladies for line dancing, and slowly found herself at the front of the room — a student who became a teacher almost by accident. Watching her begin again, later than most and braver than all of us, taught me it's never too late to become someone new.

Ling is my second mother, and I mean that plainly. She took me to buy my first school uniform, walked me through the small, awkward milestones of growing up, sat me down and taught me how to put on makeup. In our family the big love arrives quietly, in errands and small lessons — and most of mine came from her.

One of the perks of having an older (and wealthier) sister is that I get to stay at awesome ryokans. Nestled in the heart of the onsen town was the adorable Boun Kusatsu, where milky waters steamed into the crisp air and everything felt hushed, warm, and serene. A few years post-graduation, Pei brought me on her snowboarding trip with her friends from Hong Kong. I was nursing a bad breakup, so I was pretty silent that entire trip.
