Ling never planned any of it. She left her office job, joined some ladies for line dancing, and slowly found herself at the front of the room — a student who became a teacher almost by accident. Watching her begin again, later than most and braver than all of us, taught me it's never too late to become someone new.

Ling is my second mother, and I mean that plainly. She took me to buy my first school uniform, walked me through the small, awkward milestones of growing up, sat me down and taught me how to put on makeup. In our family the big love arrives quietly, in errands and small lessons — and most of mine came from her.
