Inspired by a memorable mishap near Notre-Dame Cathedral. After entering the metro, I decided to empty my pockets full of used tickets, only to realise that the valid ticket had been tossed out too. The mistake turned into an expensive €50 lesson and a traveller who was too upset to visit Notre-Dame that day. Years later, the cathedral had burned down, and the two sisters were left with a bittersweet memory of a journey they never accomplished. I was interning at Mammoth Lakes when Pei came to visit. We both agreed that the food at American ski resorts weren't the best. By then, I was a much better snowboarder than her from practicing daily and I was quite proud to have surpassed the pro. 猛犸湖 (Měng Mǎ Hú)

Having set her own dreams aside once, Ling went and built a freer life anyway — on a dance floor, on her own terms. The bird suits her: she found her wings late, and flew.

In Japan, they have these extremely adorable, boxy little cars that look like pastel-coloured washing machines on wheels. Pei found them hilarious and started calling them the “bu hao yi si” car — a joke that sounds way better in Chinese. It’s so cute, it almost feels embarrassing to be seen in. This piece reflects that light-hearted memory we shared. In Chinese symbolism, clouds represent harmony, protection, and gentle balance. When in America, it’s completely normal to stay in your ski gear — who really has the luggage space for coats and proper boots anyway? Well… that logic didn’t quite translate in Japan. I had a very memorable (and slightly embarrassing) three-hour train ride from Niseko to Chitose, where everyone was dressed in muted shades of grey and black, like winter office wear. And then there was me — in full traffic-light colours with zebra-striped pants. I will never forget that moment.

You can probably tell by now how much we LOVE Japan. On another family trip, Pei, Thomas (Ling’s husband), and I took a day off to snowboard at Shiga Kogen. I do not remember what the rest were up to as I was having way too much fun in an unexpected trio. I never thought I’d get a moment like this with Thomas and Pei. Living apart isn’t easy, and it’s made me cherish moments like these even more.
